Benny Andersson

Composer and author of Kristina from Duvemåla

Benny Andersson grew up with Swedish folk music and started to play the harmonica as a kid. His breakthrough with pop music came with the band Hep Stars in the 60s. Benny started to compose the material for the band. During that time he met with Björn Ulvaeus and they started their collaboration. With Agneta Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad they started the band ABBA in 1970 and played together until 1983.

After meeting with Tim Rice in 1981 Björn and Benny started to work on their first musical Chess, which premiered in London 1986. A musical based on songs by ABBA, Mamma Mia! premiered in London 1999 and has since been performed around the world and made into a movie.

In Kristina from Duvemåla Benny has returned to Swedish folk music. 2001 he started an orchestra, Benny Anderssons Orkester. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and has an honorary degree at the Faculty of Art at the University of Stockholm.
